Covid Corner with Dr. Gary Jacques
"You never know what's around the corner. It could be everything. Or it could be nothing. You keep putting one foot in front of the other, and then one day you look back and you've climbed a mountain." -Tom Hiddleston Dear MANNM staff and Los Alamos community, Facts: Yesterday 29 new cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in New Mexico, bringing our total up to 237. No cases have yet been confirmed in Los Alamos. There have been 2 deaths, 22 people are in the hospital, 26 people have recovered. Commentary: We are seeing large metropolitan areas and places of high population density bearing the brunt of this disease in its current phase. However, experts fully expect covid-19 will arrive in rural and remote locations like ours eventually. There will be a corona virus screening this Thursday, February 2 at Overlook Park in White Rock. I would be a little surprised if we do not detect some cases in our county as a result of that screening if not sooner. By the way, MANNM is actively pursuing the rapid tests you are all reading about. For now they will all go to places that are hardest hit. I hope they scale up production of these such that we can get them when they are most needed here. Encouragement: We can speculate all we want about whether this virus will hit us here in a big way or a small way but regardless, let's put our best foot forward today. Do the right thing today and let tomorrow bring what it will. Dr. Jacques
